One of the most popular tourist cities in the world, Barcelona holds numerous cultural, historical, and culinary attractions that draw millions of visitors each year. One of the most popular tourist destinations is Las Ramblas, a major boulevard that passes through the central part of the city.
Las Ramblas is lined with shops, restaurants, and theaters. Here are three can’t-miss attractions on the boulevard:
- Gran Teatre del Liceu. Opera aficionados can buy tickets to a performance at the Liceu, one of the most famous opera houses in the world. Since opening to great fanfare in 1847, the Las Ramblas theater has played host to singers such as Luciano Pavarotti and Maria Callas.
- Miro’s Mosaic. Close to the Liceu stands a world-famous piece of art that many travelers walk over without noticing. The piece, a pavement mosaic representing the cosmos by the Spanish artist Joan Miró, lies at the midway point of Las Ramblas in Pla de l’Os.
- Columbus Monument. Located at the southernmost tip of Las Ramblas, this monument (locally known as Mirador de Colom) was erected in 1888 to honor Christopher Columbus, whose journeys to North America were sponsored by the Spanish monarchy.
